Chiarascuro – Black Background Horse Portraits

One of my favourite techniques in traditional oil paintings is chiarascuro, a classic technique developed by da Vinci, Caravaggio and Rembrandt who used high contrast shadows and light to create drama in their paintings.

I don’t have the time (or the patience) required to create photo realistic oil paintings anymore, but I am really enjoying playing with this technique again with my studio lighting equipment.
