Three Red Ponies – Michelle Wrighton Photography

PRESS RELEASE 8 August 2019

I’d like to announce some exciting changes for my business, the big one being the new name and brand for my horse photography – Three Red Ponies.

The change has come about for several reasons. I’m a fairly private person and have never liked using my own name – the only reason it is my ASIC registered business name is because I could not come up with anything else that I liked until now 😁

I also feel that using a my name, even as a ASIC registered business name, muddies the line between business and hobbyist as its so common for hobby photographers to add ‘photography’ to their name without actually running a legal business. I have been a professional business since 2004, so its a minor distinction that as it turns out, is important to me.

As an artist my name will always be important to my work, but as a business, a name that can’t be misspelled is also important 😊

So why the change now?

The past twelve months have been very challenging for me personally in so many ways. For a while there I lost myself – I didn’t think it possible, but there have been darker days this year than in more than a decade of incredibly stressful years we had living with my husband’s life threatening illness.

The lifeboat that saved me when I was overwhelmed and felt like I was drowning both then and now, was our ponies.

Specifically, three very special red ones.

The little one left a gaping hole in our lives when we lost him last year, but I like to think he will live on forever in my new business name (you can read more about him on the blog).

To cut a very long story short, I have realised that I can’t change the crap that happens in life, all I can do is make the time in between worth living.

For me that means making room in my life for more fun, more ‘me’ time with my ponies and more time with others who love their ponies as much as I do mine.

Those who know me personally know I have always walked to the beat of my own drum, so I will continue to do things differently to other photographers to better serve my clients.

The Three Red Ponies brand now allows me to embrace changes to the experience I offer my private client that I have wanted to implement for over two years (I’ll explain more about that in a later post).

Finally I would like to thank everyone who took the time to vote in my ‘Ponies’ poll on my Facebook page last week – knowing there are so many other adults out there who call their horses ‘ponies’ gave me the extra courage needed to change my business name to Three Red Ponies.

Black background studio horse photography

Chiarascuro – Black Background Horse Portraits

One of my favourite techniques in traditional oil paintings is chiarascuro, a classic technique developed by da Vinci, Caravaggio and Rembrandt who used high contrast shadows and light to create drama in their paintings. I don’t have the time (or the patience) required to create photo realistic oil paintings any more, but I am really enjoying playing with this technique

Dramatic Studio Lighting | Horse and Dog Photography

I have always been a natural light photographer, I’ve never liked formal studio photography for people and only ever used artificial lighting for ‘fill flash’ to lift the shadows when natural light was not enough to provide a professional result. My involvement as official photographer for the Lexus Melbourne Cup’s Tour of Boyup Brook in 2018 saw me updating my

Best Time of Day for Horse Photography

Time of day is important for photographs The word Photography is derived from Greek words and literally means ‘drawing with light’. Without light, a photograph can’t be created at all, but the quality of the light is also vital to the quality of the finished photograph. This is particularly important with natural light sessions as the sun is only light
